Circus in coming to town

Wednesday, August 24, 2011

The Culpepper & Merriweather Circus, billed as America's favorite big top circus, is coming to Monett on Wednesday, Sept. 14 at Monett's North Park, with two scheduled performances at 5 and 7:30 p.m. The show is sponsored by the Monett Kiwanis Club.

Now in its 27th edition, C&M Circus has become internationally known for quality family entertainment. This authentic one-ring, big top circus has been featured on National Geographic's Explorer TV series, Entertainment Tonight, the A&E Special: Under the Big Top and most recently, On the Road with Circus Kids, a Nickelodeon special featured on the Nick News Program.

This year, the circus is proud to present Skeeter as the Culpepper & Merriweather Circus advance clown.

Skeeter, a graduate of the Ringling Clown College, will be in town on Tuesday, Sept. 6 to visit schools, day cares, recreation centers, libraries and senior centers. She might be seen in stores, walking the streets of Monett and handing out the official 2011 Culpepper & Merriweather Circus coloring contest sheets.

She has spent much of the last 25 years traveling around the country -- clowning around.

The community is invited to watch as North Park is transformed into a bustling circus city. Activity at the grounds will include animals being unloaded, the "Big Top" being erected and rigging prepared for performances later in the day. Area residents will have the opportunity to experience the magic and tradition of the American circus with family and friends.

Between 9:30 and 10 a.m., on Sept. 14, workers will perform the time-honored tradition of "raising the Big Top." Those in attendance will be invited to stay for the free tour of the grounds. This presentation will offer a unique face-to-face opportunity for families, schools and interested community members to meet and learn all about the Culpepper & Merriweather Circus family. It also includes a walking tour of the circus grounds.

In recent years, the tent raising and morning tour have become a popular program for families and interested community members. It is presented in a way everyone, young and old can learn many interesting facts about the Culpepper & Merriweather Circus.

On circus day, performers will bring the magic of the circus to life in each 90-minute show.

This year's lineup includes an all-star group of performers and entertainers that include: Miss Simone on the single trapeze; Lovely Lana's Feathered Friends; Miss Paulina on the web; The Arlise Troupe on unicycles; Angel Perez with juggling; The Silverlake's sizzling whips; Karina and her hoola hoops; The Perez Russian Swing; and the performing Jungle Cats, presented by Mr. Trey Key. The show is highlighted with original music written by Matt Margucci, from Los Angeles, Calif.

Tickets may be purchased in advance at UMB bank, Community National Bank, the Monett Area YMCA, First State Bank and Mexican Plaza. Prices for advance tickets are $6 for children ages 2 to 12 years of age and $9 for adults. Children under the age of 2 will be admitted free of charge.

Ticket prices on the day of the show will be $12 for adults and $7 for children.

Telemarketers will be contacting local businesses to commit to buying tickets for family members and employees.
