The Monett FFA has cleaned from the Little Flat bridge to the Big Flat Creek bridge for over 15 years. The group cleans the litter from the stream and used a kick net to sample aquatic macro-invertebrates from the riffles.
Certain kinds of aquatic insects are indicators of water quality. The students involved in the clean up make observations as they wade down the stream about such things as the riparian zone, shade and species of wildlife they see.
When the group finished the cleaning and swimming, they enjoyed snacks and a drink.
The Missouri Department of Conservation supplies a T-shirt, gloves, mesh trash bags, pencils and note pads to each participant for working at the stream.
