Firefighters around Monett have been scrambling this week, often in support of nearby departments, to grass fires. The fire shown above broke out without any apparent source in a wooded field three miles east of Freistatt around noon on Thursday.

The Monett Fire Department's brush truck, driven by Lance Allcock with Danny Fowler on the cannon, joined Freistatt Fire Association Chief Leland Doss, Art Mattlage, Jeffrey Losack and Willie Hesemann in stopping the fire. Mattlage said the fire seemed to start at the road, suggesting a discarded cigarette could have started the blaze.

Monett Fire Chief Tom Jones said the entire afternoon on Wednesday was spent fighting two fires east of Pierce City. The first broke out on Jesse Breazzeal's property on mile north of Highway 37 on Farm Road 1050. Once firefighters got it under control, a second erupted about three miles south on Greg Lombard's farm, threatening a heavily wooded area.

Multiple departments worked both fires, and earthmoving equipment from the Department of Conservation was used in the second blaze. A burn ban is in effect for Monett and surrounding communities.
