One unusual sight not likely to be seen again in Pierce City this summer is a crane standing in the middle of Clear Creek.

As part of construction replacing the Highway 97 bridge, the construction company contracting with the Missouri Department of Transportation to replace the old 1935 wood bridge has filled in the creek so that a crane can lift pieces of the new bridge in place. Water is still traveling downstream through the two pipes placed under the layer of rocks, shown at center left.

The strategy has been so effective that a school of fish swimming upstream from the bridge swam freely without being disturbed. The bridge is due to be finished by mid-September.
