Sword fighting in Monett Saturday

Friday, July 22, 2011

A local group of medieval combat enthusiasts will gather at Monett's South Park on Saturday to test their mettle in classic sword fighting skills.

The Celtic Guardians, a group based in Monett, is part of a larger "Dagheir" organization that gathers to test skills in the kinds of combat crafts seen at Renaissance fairs. They will meet around 5 p.m. on Saturday on the main field at South Park.

According to Steven Walker, one of the officers in the Monett group, the Celtic Guardians have only been active for a few months. In looking for other enthusiasts, they discovered a group from Cassville that has been meeting for almost a year.

The Saturday event will bring the Monett and Joplin organizations together to challenge the Cassville and Springfield groups. There is a junior division for participants ages 13 to 17, and an adult division.

The group has been meeting each Saturday at 6 p.m. at South Park. Participants use safe versions of swords, axes, spears, bows and arrows and rocks for their combat efforts. Matches last until one of the parties has "perished."

Walker said there is a point system and rules for using armor and shields. Groups usually engage in organized games such as tag, zombie, capture the flag and kings.

Participants come to matches in period costume and in character. The chapter will provide the "weapons." Walker said visitors who want to watch are welcome. Interested persons can sign paperwork to join.
