The Monett Youth Baseball and Softball League hosted the 2011 Missouri Babe Ruth Softball state championships last weekend at Monett's North Park.

Winners for each softball division were as follows:

8-and-under:

* First: Mineral Area Hurricanes.

* Second: Mineral Area Lady Pups.

* Third: Aurora.

The Mineral Area Hurricanes dominated the division by winning every game. The Hurricanes featured a solid team on offense and defense. The Monett 8-and-under team finished in fourth place.

"They played very well and fought hard in every game," said Monett Coach Julie Southard. "I am very proud of my team and felt like we had a great experience in the tournament."

10-and-under

* First: Boonville.

* Second: Heartland Nationals.

* Third: Mineral Area Mayhems.

The Boonville team prevailed after suffering a loss in the early rounds, which forced them to battle through the losers' bracket to claim the crown.

Monett team's took fifth in the division.

"Our girls played well," said Monett Coach Dave Kirma. "All the teams were all very well matched. It was just not our day to prevail."

12-and-under

* First: Mineral Area.

* Second: Boonville.

* Third: Monett.

The Mineral Area girls won this division, but it was not an easy task. Mineral Area came through the losers' bracket and defeated Boonville twice to give Mineral Area the crown.

Monett's team finished in third place, coming back from a 13-5 deficit to defeat Sikeston.

Monett rallied in the fifth inning to take a 14-13 lead and held off the Sikeston in the sixth inning to pick up the victory.

"I was very impressed with my team and how they never gave up the whole game," said Monett Coach Jeff Franke.

14-and-under

* First: Monett.

* Second: Boonville.

* Third: Heartland.

The Monett 14-and-under girls softball team, the same team that qualified for the Babe Ruth World Series in the 12 and-under division last year, claimed the 14-and under state title this year.

Monett was never really challenged in any of thier games.

"You really don't have to coach these girls too hard," said Monett Coach Ed Rhea. "They know how to play, they know how to break down a team, and they know how to get the job done. It is a real joy to coach them."

16-and-under

* First: Sikeston.

* Second: Sarcoxie.

Sikeston and Sarcoxie were the only two teams in the 16-and-under division. Sikeston defeated Sarcoxie by beating them twice.

The first and second place teams in each division move on to regional play. Monett's 14-and-under team will be playing at the regional contest in Sikeston on July 20.
