Seeking sidewalk scribblers

Wednesday, July 13, 2011

The second annual Chalk Walk on Broadway will be held on Friday, Aug. 12. The event is sponsored by the Monett Chamber of Commerce.

The Chalk Walk will consist of teams and individuals in two age groups, 15 and older, and 14 and under. Adult supervision is required for contestants under the age of 15 until the project is completed.

Artists will be provided with a 12-piece color chalk set and assigned a four-foot by four-foot sidewalk space along Broadway Street. Artists can use their own chalk if they desire, but only sidewalk chalk can be used.

"The event will be fun for all ages," said Alice Heim, Monett Chamber of Commerce administrative assistant. "The event gives the contestants an opportunity to show off their artistic talent."

Participants have two hours to complete the artwork beginning at 5:30 p.m. Drawing stops at 7:30 p.m., and the judging begins at that time.

Artwork is judged on creativity, imagination and color. The decision of the judges will be final. All artwork will be photographed and may be displayed on the chamber website or in publications.

Teams may consist of one to three artists. They will have one lead artist, with a maximum of two supporting artists per space. Art must be family friendly. Organizers have the right to disqualify and/or remove any inappropriate art or writing as they deem necessary.

No stenciling is allowed. Photos and drawings may be used as a guide only. No political or commercial advertising statements are allowed.

Artwork needs to be signed, and artists are responsible for cleaning the area after their art is completed and judged.

The contest will be held weather permitting, and there will be no rain date.
