Barry County woman perishes in house fire

Wednesday, July 13, 2011

On July 9, an early morning fire claimed the life of 71-year-old Barbara Hobbs, of Exeter. The Exeter Fire Protection District responded to the fire at around 5:30 a.m. Saturday morning.

Around a half dozen volunteer firefighters battled the blaze with four fire apparatus vehicles for nearly five hours before containing the fire and clearing the scene at 10:08 a.m.

Although the home, which is located on Farm Road 1075 south of Exeter, was not a total loss, the residence is uninhabitable, said Jim Matthew, Exeter fire chief.

Hobbs' possible cause of death was recorded as smoke inhalation. Her body was removed from the home by a firefighter before the structure was consumed by the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the state fire marshal and will be released at a later date. State investigations are ordered for any fatality fire. The fire is not considered suspicious, said Matthew.
