The Southwest Area Career Center Junior ROTC program hosted the Springfield Area JROTC Conference's annual JROTC Olympic competition for the first time. The event was held on April 9 at several locations in Monett, including the SWACC rappel tower, the Burl Fowler Stadium and the Monett Middle School. The all-day sporting competitions hosted Army, Navy and Marine JROTC programs at schools in Branson, Bolivar, Hillcrest, Mountain Grove, Nixa, Republic, Forsyth and Monett SWACC. Events included ultimate frisbee, dodge ball, tug-of-war, one-mile team run, rappelling, pulling a diesel semi-truck, pedal cars, water-balloon volleyball, pugil sticks and a wacky relay consisting of several team events such as an egg carry, leap frog, three-legged race, blindfold runs and dizzy baseball bat spin. Parents operated the concession stand and provided first aid support. The Monett Fire Department operated the rappel tower with support from the Missouri National Guard, of Monett, and the U.S. Army Recruiting Station, of Joplin. Pictured above is the winning team from Hillcrest, who also won last year's competition. Also pictured in the tug-of-war competition is Cadet Travis Koenig, a junior at Monett High School.
