Final registration is being accepted for the "Rockets Red Glam" Pageant that will kick off Monett's Freedom and Fireworks celebration. The pageant will be held on Friday at the Monett City Park Casino, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Organizer Kristie Morrison is the Missouri state director for Southern Celebrity Pageants. Morrison said around 30 crowns, sashes and trophies will be awarded in four age categories. There will be a maximum of 50 contestants for the pageant to conclude in a reasonable timeframe, she said.
There will be four age categories: newborn to 23 months, ages 2 to 5, 6 to 11, and 12 and older. Four crowns and sashes will be awarded in each age group, including the naming of a queen.
"This is an all-natural pageant," Morrison said. "There is no makeup, fake nails or hairpieces, nothing superficial other than being dressed appropriately."
There will be a costume portion of the pageant, where contestants can wear patriotic apparel. A talent show will offer a chance to demonstrate exceptional skills.
"Those who win the high spots usually have very fun personalities, not necessarily a lot of pageant experience," Morrison continued. "Contestants should not be afraid of being in front of people. Parents can bring music that their daughters like to play during the presentation. Winners may not be that talented but show a lot of personality. You cannot teach that."
Morrison said her pageants are not "Toddlers and Tiaras" and are designed for participants to have fun, not drama. She seeks judges who do not know any of the contestants and have no relatives in the show.
Participants need to pre-register. Applications are available by calling Morrison at 479-366-4473 by phone or emailing her at email@example.com. A registration fee is required. Morrison will send copies of the rules to all participants prior to the pageant.
Morrison cautioned that once all 50 slots are taken, she will not be able to accept any more participants. She may have to turn people away if they try to register the evening of the pageant.
Registration will take place between 5 and 6 p.m. The pageant will get underway at 6:30 p.m. and conclude around 10 p.m.
The Freedom and Fireworks Festival will have a mini-fireworks display around 9:30 p.m. on Friday and the major fireworks presentation at the same time on Saturday. Booth space for vendors can still be secured by contacting Brittie Oakley at 417-489-0197 or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
