Students excel at nationals

The Monett High School Public Forum Debate Teams excelled at the NFL National Tournament in Dallas, Texas, held during the week of June 13 through June 18. In a field of 246 debate teams from around the nation, the sophomore team of Bryce Isbell and Reece Johnson advanced to the debate elimination rounds. The team of Brianna Petersen and Drew Sligar kept their winning momentum up all week and placed fourth in the nation. The combined efforts of the debaters earned Monett High School the School of Excellence Award in Debate. This is the first time that Monett has earned a School of Excellence Award. The debaters are coached by Gary Cook. Pictured, from left, are: Isbell, Petersen, Cook, Sligar and Johnson. In addition to placing fourth, Petersen and Sligar each received a $2,500 college scholarship. Top competitors from a pool of more than 3,200 students were recognized in Dallas, Texas, for their outstanding accomplishments in speech and debate. Marilyn Mann is Monett High School's speech and theatre teacher.
