The annual Red, White, and Boom 5K at the Carthage Municipal Park next to the golf course and old American Legion stadium. This July 4 event benefits the Carthage Tigers running programs.
The 52nd annual Heart of America Marathon will occur at Columbia on Sept. 5.
Beat the heat! Run early in the day and protect yourself from the heat. Even after sundown, lingering temps are high enough to be dangerous for some individuals. In extreme heat, cut your training schedule back by 10 percent and limit speed or all out distance efforts to no more than twice a week -- preferably at least three days apart.
Kick the sports drink habit, get your essential vitamins and minerals from a varied diet and drink water, water, water for best training results. There are no shortcuts to excellence.
