Area runners in action and summer run tips

Friday, June 17, 2011

The Monett Ragsdales recently competed in the third annual Memorial Day Relay For Life at Nixa.

Jerry Ragsdale placed seventh overall and second in the men's 40-49 division, completing the 5K course in 19:37.7.

Jonah Ragsdale also cracked the top 10 overall, finishing ninth in the race and first in the men's 13-19 division with a 19:56.1 effort.

Mary Ragsdale finished seventh in the women's 40-49 division, running 43:54.0.

Upcoming races to watch for include:

The third annual Freedom Run of the Ozarks is scheduled for July 2 at Table Rock Lake Dam, featuring 5K, 10K, and half-marathon races. All proceeds from this event benefit the Table Rock Freedom Center, a non-denominational, faith-based recovery residential program for women.

The annual Red, White, and Boom 5K at the Carthage Municipal Park next to the golf course and old American Legion stadium. This July 4 event benefits the Carthage Tigers running programs.

The 52nd annual Heart of America Marathon will occur at Columbia on Sept. 5.

Training tips

Beat the heat! Run early in the day and protect yourself from the heat. Even after sundown, lingering temps are high enough to be dangerous for some individuals. In extreme heat, cut your training schedule back by 10 percent and limit speed or all out distance efforts to no more than twice a week -- preferably at least three days apart.

Kick the sports drink habit, get your essential vitamins and minerals from a varied diet and drink water, water, water for best training results. There are no shortcuts to excellence.
