More details announced for July 4 fest in Monett

Thursday, June 9, 2011

Plans are expanding for Monett's celebration of the nation's birthday next month. Sarah Hohensee, chairperson of Freedom and Fireworks, has announced the schedule for the holiday weekend that includes some surprises.

The local celebration has moved from July 4 to the preceding weekend and expanded to two days.

Activity will kick off on Friday, July 1, as a family and youth night. Vendors will open at 6 p.m. "Rockets Red Glam," a professionally run beauty pageant for newborns to age 20, will be held at the City Park Casino.

The band "Offset Sunset" will perform from the stage set up in the park, followed by "Consumed by Fire" at 8 p.m.

A small scale fireworks display will take place at 9:30 p.m. on Friday. Hohensee indicated the response to fundraising for fireworks has been so enthusiastic that organizers feel they can offer the same quality show Monettans have come to enjoy on Saturday night plus have a show on Friday.

"The more money we raise, the bigger the displays," Hohensee said.

Donations for fireworks can be sent to Freedom and Fireworks, PO Box 397, Monett, Mo. 65708.

Saturday activities are due to kick off in the morning instead of late afternoon. Vendors will open at 9 a.m. The Monett Lions Club will offer their barbecued chicken dinners beginning at 11 a.m. The Monett Municipal Swimming Pool will open at noon, courtesy of the Monett Area YMCA, at no charge.

Inflatables provided by the YMCA and the Missouri National Guard will open for use by children at noon. Live music will be offered from 1 to 4 p.m. by amateurs and a disc jockey.

A pie eating contest will begin the evening activities at 5 p.m., followed by a demonstration by RWTB Martial Arts at 6 p.m. Announcements are scheduled for 7 p.m.

There will be a patriotic address, Hohensee said. The time and speaker are still being arranged.

Corybel Country is set to present a concert of primarily country music beginning at 7:30 p.m. The National Anthem will be sung at 9:30 p.m., leading directly into the fireworks show from A.M. Pyrotechnics, of Buffalo.

"There are links to photos and music videos on our website as well as vendor forms," Hohensee said. "Vendors are still welcome. We are still needing volunteers to help. Please call Josue Cavazos 236-5843 or Sarah Hohensee 669-2019."

Registration forms for vendors are available on the organizer's website, www.freedomandfireworks.com, as well as videos on the bands performing. Posters are available. Hohensee invited businesses interested in displaying a poster to contact her.

Freedom and Fireworks will hold its next meeting to work out details for the celebration at 6 p.m. on Thursday at Mocha Jo's, 404 E. Broadway in Monett.
