Veterans from Hobbs-Anderson American Legion Post #91 will distribute more than 1,000 flags to the graves of Monett veterans today for Memorial Day. Wayne Rutherford, at left, and Nick Sczenski, at right, will be joined by other Legionnaires and members of Cub Scout Pack #140 in placing flags on graves in the St. John's-McCormick, IOOF, Oakdale, Calvary, Cox, Waldensian, Calton and Macedonia cemeteries. The Legion also provides the flag display for the weekend at the entrance of the IOOF Cemetery and at the Grand Army of the Republic memorial at the Oakdale Cemetery. Additional flags for graves that may have been missed will be located at the IOOF entrance. Rutherford and Sczenski stand at the grave of Roger Able, Vietnam war veteran and past commander of Tom Wolfe Memorial Post #4207, Veterans of Foreign Wars. On Monday, May 30 at noon, the VFW and Ladies Auxiliary will hold their annual Memorial Day Service at the Monett IOOF Cemetery. Area residents are invited to attend. Local veterans were also out in force this morning conducting their annual Buddy Poppies sales drive to raise money for veterans programs. [Times Photo by Murray Bishoff]
