Carthage - Joplin Regional Stockyards: Feeder Cattle Auction Closing Report for 05/23/2011

   Compared to last week, calves under 400 lbs mostly steady; other steers 
3.00-8.00 lower with heifers 2.00-7.00 lower.  True yearlings were not 
well tested.  The mood at the stockyards today was very somber as a life-
taking tornado struck Joplin Sunday evening, causing total destruction 
and numerous deaths. Buyers helped one family that was connected to the 
stockyards as they auctioned a heifer several times over to raise money 
for the family as they lost everything but their lives in the tornado.  
The generosity of everyone raised 10,000 dollars for the family, which 
cried with appreciation. Feeder offerings around 57 percent steers and 
bulls, 43 percent heifers, offering over 600 lbs around 37 percent.  
Demand light to moderate, supply light.
