Pierce City's Derek Turner wins state high jump title

Pierce City's Derek Turner won the Class 2 boys high jump, clearing the bar at 6'5" to lead the Eagles to a 10th place team finish at Jefferson City.

Robert Baldwin finished seventh in the triple jump with a leap of 41'11.25". Cedric O'Hara placed seventh in the 100-meter dash with his 11.31 and seventh in the 200-meter dash with a 22.78 effort.

The Eagles scored in the 4x200 meter relay, as the team of Chance Chapman, Wayne Sooter, O'Hara and Cody Cox placed eighth in 1:33.43. The same quartet placed 12th in the 4x100 meter relay.

Pierce City's 4x400 meter team of Turner, Zack Hyde, Sooter and Baldwin raced to seventh place with a time of 3:32.18 in the final event of the day.

Zach Crouch finished 12th in the shot put with a throw of 46' even.

The Pierce City Lady Eagles scored 12 points to finish 23rd in the team standings.

Krishna Merriman led the way with her fourth place finish in the 400-meter dash, clocking 59.82.

The 4x200 meter relay squad of Emily Ashley, Christine Younker, Krishna Merriman and Kaelyn Osborn placed fourth in 1:47.32. The Pierce City girls placed ninth in the 4x100 and 4x400 meter stick events.

Sara Stearns placed seventh in the discus, throwing 112'11" for a medal. She finished 16th in the shot.

Makina Kelley placed ninth in the pole vault, and Kaelyn Osborn was 10th in the triple jump. Brianna Zebert finished 11th in the high jump.

Patton is 16th

Purdy senior Audrey Patton struggled to 16th in the Class 2 girls 3,200-meter race but had no regrets.

"I had a lot of fun this season," she said. "I finally made it to state."

Verona results

In Class 1, Verona's Wesley Kissinger leaped 18'6.75" on his final attempt to place 14th in the boys long jump. Teammate Cody Ernsberger finished 11th in the 100-meter dash prelims with a time of 11.9.
