The return of warm weather has brought a number of special features to the May Broadway Nights this Friday.
Organizers have brought back the popular chalk art contest with a few variations. Local artists of all ages are invited to participate by drawing multi-colored designs of all kinds on the sidewalk on Friday.
Participants will be assigned a section of sidewalk for their work. Approved chalk that will wash off of the sidewalk must be used. Chalk will be available or artists can bring their own.
Contestants must register by 5 p.m. on Thursday at Connie's Photography, located at 318 E. Broadway, so that enough material will be available.
Artists will work on their creations from 4 to 8 p.m., and winners will be announced at 8:30 p.m. Prizes will be awarded in children, youth and adult divisions.
Live music will be offered at the coffee houses. The Allan Phillips Band will perform at Mocha Jo's at 404 E. Broadway. Neva Welters will play a wide range of music on the hammered dulcimer at Denali Dreams at 316 E. Broadway.
Stores will be open late with many season offerings. The clothing stores, like Fashion Crossroads, will have their summer lines on display. Peppers and Company is now carrying shoes and has colorful jewelry for the summer. Brownsberger's has men's and women's summer clothing and accessories available with many items on sale.
The Trunk has its full line of summer clothes for children, including shorts, tops, sandals and swimsuits. As a special for Broadway Nights, 25 percent off is offered on clothing and shoes.
Blessings Books and Gifts has graduation cards and gifts available, plus 25 percent off on recorded storybooks. Bruner's has summer sandals, fancy fans and graduation gifts. Preparing for the summer heat, Westco will have a full line of air conditioners with financing available.
Stores will be open late to encourage after-hours shopping.
