The first in what is expected to be monthly dances at the Monett Senior Citizens Center was held on Tuesday and attracted around 115 people.

Vernal "Pooch" Caldwell, organizer of the dance, said future dances will be held on the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m.

Caldwell modeled the program after the dance in Stella. Jack Roy, the Stella dance organizer, was on hand with his wife, Lora, joining in the dancing. Roy said dances at the Stella Senior Center are held every Friday and on the first Saturday of the month.

"We want everyone to feel like family," Roy said.

To get the Monett dance off on the right foot, Caldwell booked the Funtimers band, which plays regularly at the dance every Saturday at the Heritage Harmony House in Aurora.

Other regular dances are held at senior centers in Cassville, Shell Knob, Seligman and Pierce City. All of these dances have been known to attract large crowds.

Caldwell said there were participants at the Monett dance from Monett, Shell Knob, Stella, Joplin, Neosho, Miller, Pierce City, Mt. Vernon and Purdy.
