Weekend marked by serious wrecks

Several people suffered injuries in area wrecks over the weekend.

A single-vehicle wreck at 4:50 p.m. on Sunday on Highway TT seven miles west of Crane sent two people to a Springfield hospital.

The crash occurred when the driver of a 2005 Ford F350 pickup truck, Teaira D. Carr, 22, of Crane, drove off the roadway and overturned. A passenger in the vehicle, Ethan Strickrodt, 21, of Aurora, was ejected.

Both Carr and Strickrodt received serious injuries in the wreck, and both were taken to St. John's Hospital in Springfield. Neither was wearing a safety belt.

Other crashes

* Four teenagers were injured in a crash that occurred at 11 p.m. on County Road 2210 at County Road 1127 one mile west of Verona on Sunday. According to a report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the driver of a 1996 Ford Taurus, Laurent P. Davis, 18, of Mt. Vernon, lost control of the vehicle and ran off the roadway, striking a corner post. Davis and three passengers in the vehicle, Hollie Hardy, 19, of Citrus Heights, Calif., Steven Henze, 18, of Verona, and Terry Parker, 19, of Mt. Vernon, received serious injuries and were taken to St. John's Hospital in Springfield. All of the occupants were wearing safety belts.

* Three people were injured in a crash that occurred at 3:40 p.m. on Friday on Highway 39 five miles north of Aurora. The wreck happened when the driver of a 2004 Ford F150, Clayton P. Sumners, 16, of Aurora, struck the back of a 2002 Dodge Stratus, driven by Sherry C. Marks, 20, of Aurora. Marks and two passengers in the vehicle, Cory K. Haumann, 22, of Mt. Vernon, and Gregory T. Owens, 19, of Mt. Vernon, received moderate injuries in the wreck and were taken to St. John's Hospital in Springfield. Only Haumann was not wearing a seat belt.

* A Republic man was seriously injured in a crash that occurred at 4 a.m. on Friday on Interstate 44 seven miles east of Mt. Vernon. The wreck occurred as the eastbound lanes of I-44 were closed due to a previous crash and the driver of a 1994 Ford Ranger, Tony V. Shoemaker, 39, failed to stop and struck the back of a 2007 Peterbilt, driven by Michael L. Worsham, 39, of Carthage, before skidding into a 2005 Freightliner, driven by Man C. Sung, 64, of Downey, Calif. The Ranger then skidded off the left side of the road and into the median. Shoemaker was taken to Cox Hospital South in Springfield. Sung and Worsham were wearing seat belts. Shoemaker was not.
