Monett youth place at state

Friday, April 1, 2011

The best youth wrestlers from around the state traveled to Columbia for the 2011 USA Missouri State Championships last Saturday. Thirteen members of the Monett Youth Wrestling Club qualified for the event by placing in the top four at the Region C tournament in Carthage.

Monett finished 17th out of 149 clubs and finished second in the 8-and-under bracket.

Monett's Clayton Cordova claimed a state championship in the 8-and under, 130-pound weight division. Cordova logged four first period pins on his way to the championship.

The wrestling Cubs had three second place finishers. Joseph Semerad, 8-and-under, 60 pound, and Ian Meyer, 12-and-under, 125 pound, both lost heartbreakers in overtime in the finals. Wesley Merriman, 8 and under, 100 pounds, was Monett's other finalist.

Other participants who placed for Monett were: Ben Cole, 12-and-under, 175-pounds and Carlos Cordova, 12-and-under 205 pounds. Both finished in fifth place.

Also representing Monett at the state competition were: Michael Vincent, Hunter Pyle, Kedric Brink, Dominic Witherow, Matthew Bahl, Cole Davis and Ian Jackson.

Editor's note: A special thank you to Justin Semerad and Nancy Noll-Meyer for providing the youth wrestling information and pictures this season.
