An expanded celebration of the nation's birthday in Monett is planned by the Freedom and Fireworks Committee, the newly incorporated panel of volunteers organizing the local event.

The biggest change will move the fireworks display from July 4, which falls on a Monday, to the preceding Saturday, July 2.

Sarah Hohensee, chairperson of the committee, has announced this year's celebration will begin on Friday, July 1. Entertainers will include the bands, Offset Sunset and Consumed By Fire, as well as others not yet announced.

Activities will include a "Rockets Red Glam" pageant to be held the evening of July 1 at the City Park Casino. This beauty pageant is open to contestants ranging from babies to 20 years old and will have two divisions: naturals and glamours. For more information, call Kristie Morrison at 479-366-4473.

On Saturday, July 2, a wide range of activities are planned. The Monett Lions Club will again sell barbecued chicken dinners from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the park. Vendors will be set up in the park. Contests and live entertainment will be scheduled.

Inflatables from the Monett Area YMCA will offer opportunities for games and activities.

The municipal swimming pool will again be open free of charge, thanks to the Monett Area YMCA. Lifeguards will provide free swimming lessons.

Vendors can secure booth space for $50 for Saturday or $75 for Friday and Saturday. Booths can be secured by contacting Brittie Oakley at 417-489-0197 or via email at freedomandfireworks@yahoo.com.

Donations are also being sought to cover the expense of the fireworks display.

Volunteers are needed to help plan, coordinate and run the event. Anyone willing to help will be welcome at the next committee meeting, which will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, April 11 at Mocha Jo's at 404 E. Broadway.
