The Monett City Council honored Linn Thornton for his years of service to the community during the February city council meeting. Mayor Jim Orr, at right, presented Thornton with the key to the city, the first known presentation of such an honor. City Clerk Janie Knight read the following proclaimation: "The City Council of the City of Monett desires to recognize Linn Thornton, express gratitude and compliment Linn Thornton on his civic-minded acts of kindness to families during the holiday season. For many years Mr. Thornton has organized a Christmas toy drive and community dinner, benefiting families and children of the community. His generosity has organized a yearly ritual that adds joy to many lives. The city council would like to acknowledge his efforts and commend him for the sacrifices made in providing a more enjoyable Christmas season for the City of Monett and surrounding communities. The council wishes Mr. Thornton continued success in the preparation of these Christmas activities and his personal endeavors. Again, thank you, Linn Thornton, for your selfless acts of compassion." Thornton said his contribution has been a group effort and praised the community for its support.
