The Monett Middle School seventh grade Cubs fell 42-37 in overtime to Carl Junction Monday night.

Down by 6 points with two minutes to play, the Cubs stepped up the defensive pressure and even took a one-point lead with 20 seconds to play.

The Cubs' Logan Coones was fouled and calmly sank two free throws to give the Monett a three-point lead.

The Bulldogs Ryan Devore found some room with two seconds to go and launched a 25-foot shot that hit nothing but net.

"I felt like it was a once-in-a-lifetime shot," said Monett seventh grade Head Coach Blair Powell. "I would give them that shot anytime. The kids were down after the game, but we told them to keep their heads up, that we would see them again in the Big 8 Tournament. Next time the result will be different."

Monett led 3-0 at the end of the first quarter. The score was knotted at 13 at halftime.

Coones led Monett in scoring with 16 points. Cameron Witt added 5 points. Jonah Paszek and Blake Moore tallied 3 points apiece. David Lee score 10 points.

Eighth grade

The Monett eighth grade fell 60-13 to Carl Junction.

The Cubs trailed 16-4 after the first quarter and 31-8 at halftime.

"This game was one of those where we played poorly as a team," said Monett eighth grade Head Coach Matthew Anderson. "We're going to put this game behind us and hopefully fix a lot of things before our next game."

Scoring for Monett were: Zach Hammond 6 points; Elijah George, Kyndal Phillips and Quincy Jackson, 2 points each; and Isaac Long, 1 point.

The seventh and eighth graders play at Strafford on Thursday.
