Joplin Regional Stockyards: Cow and Bull Auction Close for 1/19/11

   Compared last Wednesday, breaking and boning slaughter cows sold 4.00-
6.00 higher while lean cows sold 2.00-3.00 higher and slaughter bulls sold
4.00-5.00 higher. Several factors contributed to sharply higher slaughter
prices, including a need for more cows, higher meat prices and a winter
storm looming across the Midwest. There was a heavy supply of young bred
cows with someone more than ready to give each of them a new home. There
was only a scattered offering of cow/calf pairs. Supply was heavy and
demand very good for slaughter classes.

most 78.00-96.00, few 99.00-106.00; 3-7 yrs 840-1290 lbs most 66.00-77.00,
pkg. thin blacks 95.00.

   Bred Cows:  Medium and Large 1-2  2 yrs to short and solid mouth 2nd
and 3rd stage 1060-1350 lbs most 875.00-1100.00, several better quality
1125.00-1200.00, 1st stage 1050-1185 lbs 800.00-975.00; short and solid
mouth to aged 2nd and 3rd stage 1200-1325 lbs 685.00-820.00. Large 1-2
4-5 yrs 2nd and 3rd stage 1400-1600 lbs 1350.00-1550.00; couple short and
solid mouth 3rd stage 1395-1425 lbs 840.00-850.00. Medium and Large 2  5
yrs 2nd and 3rd stage 1055-1100 lbs 685.00-800.00, 1st stage pkg. 835

   Cow/Calf Pairs:  Medium and Large 1-2  few 5 yrs to short and solid
mouth 1100-1300 lb cows w/babies to 185 lb calves 1010.00-1225.00. Large
1-2  5 yrs to short and solid mouth couple pkgs. 1400-1450 lb cows w/300
lb calves and some rebred 1110.00-1350.00.
