Missouri Weekly Hay Summary Week ending 1/21/11

MO Dept of Ag-USDA Market News
Another round of fury from old man winter brought hay movement to a
standstill this week. The second large snow of the year and a long
stretch of below freezing days earlier this year has lead to farmers
in some areas feeding a large amount of hay this winter. In most areas
hay supply seems to be holding out well although hay quality in most
cases is only average and requires additional supplementation. A few
reports of feeders searching and finding some high quality hay tucked in
barns have trickled in this week, so there is at least some high quality
hay left to be found and given the current price of corn even the best
hay can be bought at a cheap price compared to what additional supplement
would cost. Hay prices this week are mostly steady. Supply and demand of
hay is moderate. Missouri Department of Agriculture has a hay directory
available for both buyers and sellers. To be listed, or for a directory,
