The Monett Lady Cubs (10-4) avenged an early season defeat to Carl Junction with a resounding 59-42 over the Lady Bulldogs Monday night to open Big 8 Conference play.
The Lady Cubs trailed 12-11 after one quarter of play. Monett battled back in the second quarter, outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 16-12 to take a 27-24 lead at halftime.
"We played good team basketball," said Monett Head Coach Derrek Uhl. "This was a great way to start conference play. We are playing with a lot of confidence at the right time."
|Monett extended the halftime advantage to 11 points in the third quarter and led 45-34 heading into the fourth period.||Carl Junction would make one more push, cutting the Lady Cubs lead to 46-42 with four minutes to play. But the Lady Cubs tightened up their defense and didn't allow the Lady Bulldogs another basket.||The Lady Cubs ripped off 13 consecutive points in the final four minutes, providing the final margin of victory.||Monett finished with a sizzling 18 of 20 from the charity stripe.|
Hunter Glouse paced the Lady Cubs with 20 points. Madison Carlin added 18 points. Amanda McKinney finished with 11 points and dished out seven assists. Jenny Frazier tallied 6 points and snagged 10 rebounds, and Dedre Beckett contributed 4 points, eight rebounds and four steals.
The Lady Cubs continue Big 8 Conference play Thursday night when they host Aurora. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
The Monett JV squad fell 29-17 to Carl Junction Monday night.
