Schlichtman is the former publisher and owner of the Cassville Democrat. He served in that capacity for 10 years before he and his wife, Lisa, sold the newspaper to Rust Communications in 2004. The company purchased The Monett Times in 2009.
As general manager, Schlichtman will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations at both properties.
"We are excited to have Mike step into this management position for both newspapers in Barry County," said Ron Kemp, regional vice president for Rust Communications. "His experience and knowledge of the area will be beneficial in helping us serve readers and advertisers more effectively.
"I know that Mike and Lisa, who are partners in the ownership of The Times and the Democrat, are enthusiastic about the future growth of the area and look forward to their role as a newspaper team," Kemp added.
Schlichtman says he is excited about re-entering the newspaper publishing business.
"Once you have had a taste of the newspaper business, it is hard to get it out of your system," said Schlichtman. "I am honored to have been given this opportunity, and it feels good to be back in business. I enjoy the fast pace and daily deadlines that publishing demands."
Schlichtman, a native of Barry County, graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a degree in agricultural economics. For many years, he operated Sunny Acres, Inc., his family's feed and cattle business. Schlichtman also owns and operates the Baywash car washes in Cassville.
"Getting to know the community and people of Monett is a new chapter in my life that I welcome," added Schlichtman. "This position comes with many challenges, and I look forward to improving our products and giving the communities we serve the best publications possible."
In other management changes, Scott Grissom will serve as production manager for both newspapers. The new position streamlines operations by combining the advertising manager and composition manager positions.
Grissom has been employed with The Monett Times for almost two years. He and his fiance, Rebecca Browning, moved to Monett from Michigan four years ago.
"I've spent most of my adult life in big cities and missed being part of a community," Grissom said. "The move to Monett has been fantastic. Rebecca and I have met a lot of wonderful people."
Grissom is a graduate of Tulane University in New Orleans, La., where he earned a bachelor's degree of fine arts in printmaking.
"I believe that newspapers have an important role to play in the community," Grissom said. "I feel we have a great team here, and I look forward to providing the best service possible to our readers and advertisers."
Kemp will be serving as publisher of both The Monett Times and the Cassville Democrat. Lisa Schlichtman remains editor of The Times, editor of Connection magazine and executive editor of the Democrat.
