The Verona Lady Wildcats basketball team cruised to a 69-25 victory over Thomas Jefferson Friday night in Joplin.
The Lady Wildcats forced 32 Lady Cavalier turnovers, which led to 46 Lady Wildcat transition points. All 10 of Verona's players saw time in the game with six different Lady Wildcats scoring.
"I thought we started a little sluggish," said Verona Head Coach Ryan Yates. "Then we got going in the second quarter. I think this team is really headed in the right direction. Each time we take the floor, we are getting a little better."
Verona jumped out to a 29-9 first quarter lead and led 45-15 at halftime. The Lady Wildcats hit nine 3-pointers in the victory.
"It was nice to get our bench involved tonight," said Yates. "It gave our girls on the bench a chance to show what they can do. It was a good win."
Jenna Chadd led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with 24 points. Tristan Carrasquillo poured in 23 points. Taylor Pinkly tallied 12 points. Jessica Smith and Jordyn Butler finished with 4 points apiece, and Whitney Shue contributed 2 points.
For 16 minutes the Verona Wildcats were able to keep the Thomas Jefferson Cavaliers in check, but a third quarter push propelled TJ to a 71-54 win Friday night.
"We got outworked," said Verona Head Coach Brad Stewart.
Thomas Jefferson led 18-14 after the first quarter and 34-30 at halftime. The Cavaliers came out of the locker room red hot, opening the third quarter with a 16-7 run.
Thomas Jefferson's Alex Oserowsky amassed 31 points and eight rebounds. Jonathan Shumaker racked up 14 points while Justin Brown added 13 points and seven blocks.
Cody Ernsberger scored 12 points to lead Verona, while Ascencion Estrada and Larry Patterson each had 11 points. Wesley Kissinger finished with 9 points. Nick Washam chipped in 7 points, and Seth Losac and James Von Hauenstein added 2 points apiece.
The Wildcats and Lady Wildcats host Southwest on Tuesday night. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.
