Monday, January 10, 2011

The Monett Cubs basketball team fell 57-50 to Mt. Vernon Friday night in overtime.

Trailing much of the evening, the Cubs staged a furious fourth quarter rally and had a chance to win the game at the buzzer.

"We came up short," said Monett Head Coach Ty Goetz. "We had our chances to win the game in the last 13 seconds. We just didn't get it done."

Mt. Vernon led 13-4 at the end of the first quarter and 28-18 at halftime.

The Cubs trailed by as many as 13 in the second half before closing out regulation with a 14-7 run to send the game into overtime.

"We dug ourselves into an early hole and spent the rest of the game trying to catch up," said Goetz. "I am proud of the way we fought all night long. We could have rolled over and quit, but we stayed the course."

Jarred Witt paced the Cubs with 13 points. Tyler Green chipped in 11 points. The Cubs received other scoring support from: Kyle Woods, 9; Trenton Pierce, 6; Devin Stewart, 6; and Jacob Fair, 5 points.

The Cubs will be in action Friday against Aurora. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
