The Monett Lady Cubs basketball team scored the game's first 11 points and never looked back, defeating the Joplin Lady Eagles 62-36 in Joplin Monday night.
"We talked about starting fast and I thought we did a good job of accomplishing that goal," said Monett Head Coach Derrek Uhl. "Joplin tried to use a one-three-one zone to slow us down, and I thought we did a good job of attacking it."
Joplin didn't score until the 1:55 mark of the first quarter, as Monett built a 15-7 first quarter advantage. The Lady Cubs (8-4) got stronger in the second period as Hunter Glouse scored 12 of the team's 18 points in the frame to give Monett a commanding 33-16 lead at halftime.
Glouse finished the game with 20 points for the Lady Cubs. Madison Carlin and Dedre Beckett scored a season high of 16 and 12 apiece. Jenny Frazier tallied 8 points. Danielle Neill chipped in 5 points. Amanda McKinney finished with 1 point and also contributed 12 assists.
Monett's defense was stout all night, creating great looks for the Lady Cubs in the transition game.
"The big thing I thought we did was we kept them to one shot," said Uhl. "We did a good job blocking out and finding the open shooter on the offensive end."
The Lady Cubs junior varsity team also prevailed 35-25.
Leading point scorers for the JV Lady Cubs were: Anna Cloud, 15; Caroline McKinney, 7; Raigan Ratliff, 5; Jessica Schmidt, 5; Cheryl Barnes, 2; and Jessica Harper, 1.
Monett will play Thursday night in Diamond. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
