Purdy teams advance to championship games

Sunday, January 2, 2011

It wasn't until the final horn sounded that Purdy's Head Basketball Coach Tommy Egan could take a deep breath. Egan's team had just outlasted a pesky Billings team 84-72 to advance to the championship game of the Southwest Holiday Tournament.

"Billings is a good team," said Egan. "They played hard for 32 minutes tonight and hit big shot after big shot. We just kept plugging away and were able to find a way to win."

Purdy held a 60-54 advantage at the start of the final period. Billings would cut that lead to one point on three different occasions. The Wildcats' final chance came with 1:48 remaining.

Billings hit a layup, trimming the Eagle advantage to 73-72. The Wildcats forced a quick turnover, but a 3-point attempt rimmed out. Purdy's Landon Terry grabbed the rebound and was fouled. Billings would not score again.

"It was a team win," said Egan. "We were very balance with our scoring."
