The Monett Lady Cubs basketball team fell 39-37 to Van Buren (Ark.) Tuesday night in the Neosho Holiday Classic.
Monett led 13-9 at the end of the first quarter and 21-19 at halftime. The Lady Cubs were outscored 10-6 in the third quarter, providing the Lady Pointers with the two-point advantage.
Monett was led in scoring by Hunter Glouse with 12 points. Jenny Frazier chipped in 11 points. Amanda McKinney added 7 points. Madison Carlin tallied 5 points. Danielle Neill checked in with 2 points.
Monett will be in action this afternoon at 1:30 p.m. against Waynesville at Neosho.
The Monett Lady Cubs basketball team downed Springdale Ark., 61-49 Monday in the opening round of the Neosho Holiday Tournament.
"It's was great way to start," said Monett Head Coach Derek Uhl. "We came out strong and continued to get stronger throughout the game."
|The Lady Cubs scored the first basket of the game but would trail 16-13 at the end of the first quarter. Foul trouble hurt both squads in the first half. Monett would trail by as many as seven on two occasions in the second quarter but would fight back by using a tried and test method, attacking the basket.|
Monett would finish the second quarter with a 10-5 run, taking a 31-27 lead into halftime.
"We knew that Springdale wanted to be physical with their pressure," said Uhl. "I thought we did a good job of attacking the rim and getting to the free-throw line."
Monett would turn up the defensive intensity in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 15-8 in the frame. Springdale would storm back in the fourth period.
Trailing 46-35 at the start of the fourth quarter, the Lady Bulldogs cut the Lady Cubs lead to 42-47 with 5:14 to play. Monett would respond with two free throws apiece from Madison Carlin and Jenny Frazier. Monett was 27-34 from the charity stripe for the game.
"This really was a team win," added Uhl. "I thought we did a good job on the boards, and our bench really stepped up and played critical minutes."
Monett had four players score in double figures. Glouse led the way with 13 points. Frazier, Carlin and McKinney had 11 points apiece. Neill chipped in 8 points. Dedre Beckett finished with 7 points.
Springdale's leading scorer was Tiffany Wiseley with 27 points.
The Monett Cubs' start in the Neosho Holiday Classic hasn't been all that friendly.
On Monday night the Cubs were defeated 74-48 by Webb City. The Cubs trailed 24-11 at the end of the first quarter and 41-24 at halftime.
"We didn't value the ball tonight and had too many turnovers," said Monett Coach Ty Goetz. "The Cardinals are an athletic and good rebounding team. You can't give them second and third chances to make a basket."
Monett was led in scoring by Tyler Green and Jarred Witt with 12 points apiece. Kyle Woods pitched in 10 points. Jacob Fair chipped in 8 points. Travis Thompson and Christian Wooldridge finished with 2 points each.
Smith-Cotton from Sedalia defeated the Monett Cubs 56-52 in Tuesday matchup.
The Cubs basketball squad played with much more focus and intensity. Monett trailed 14-12 after one quarter of play but rallied to take a 30-29 lead into the locker room at halftime.
"We did some very positive things tonight," said Goetz. "We were much more physical on defense and we were able to get boards."
Monett gobbled up 14 offensive rebounds. The Achilles heel for the Cubs was free throw shooting. The Cubs were only four of 17 from the charity stripe.
"Games come down to fundamentals," added Goetz. "If we take care of business at the line, it is probably a different game."
Nine different Cubs found their way into the scorer's book. Leading the charge was Woods with 13 points. Witt added 11 points. Green, Fair and Trenton Pierce tallied 6 points each. Chris Eimer scored 5 points. Devin Steward and Thompson finished with 2 points apiece. Wooldridge finished with 1 point.
Monett with be in action today at 4:30 p.m. against Diamond in Neosho
