Porter Eugene "Gene" Browning, age 85, of Verona, MO, passed away at 2 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 20, 2010 at the Missouri Veteran's Home in Mt. Vernon, MO.
Gene was born March 11, 1925, in Monett, MO, the son of the late Boyd and Marie (Caldwell) Browning.
|He was in the Class of 1942, graduating from Monett High School. Gene was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving in both the North Atlantic and the South Pacific. After being honorably discharged from the Navy on June 4, 1946, he then attended and received his bachelor's degree from Missouri State University in Columbia, MO.||For 13 years, Gene taught school. He also was a licensed realtor and held licenses to sell insurance and securities, and as a cattleman, he had a lifetime membership with the Polled Hereford Association.||Gene was the former Commander of the Hobbs-Anderson American Legion Post #91, at which he held his membership for 58 consecutive years.|
On Sept. 5, 1965 in Monett, Gene married Eileen Marie Wormington. They were blessed with over 40 years of marriage until her death on May 23, 2006. Also preceding him in death was one sister: Ruby Lee Barnes and one brother: Carlyle Browning.
Gene is survived by five nephews: Mark Barnes, of Little Rock, AR, Lance Barnes, of Cape Girardeau, MO, Kirk Barnes, of Little Rock, AR, Stuart Browning, of Gramby, CT and Keith Browning, of the state of Connecticut; and his niece; Jamie Jones, of Little Rock, AR.
Graveside services for Mr. Browning will be at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2010 at the Liberty Cemetery, northeast of Monett. Full military honors will be provided. The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 21 at the funeral home. Arrangements have been entrusted to Buchanan Funeral Home, Monett, MO.
