Margaret Joan Mettlach, age 98, of Pierce City, Missouri, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2010, while residing in Lacoba Nursing Home in Monett.
Margaret was born on Dec. 18, 1911, on a farm south of Pierce City, the daughter of the late Louis and Dorothea (Bruenn) Diebold.
She is survived by ten children: Kathleen Younker (Willmer), Eleanor Johnson, David Mettlach (Margo), Ann Marrs, Jim Mettlach (Margie), Beatrice Dalton, Mary Jenkins (Larry), Dorthy Fischer (Ted), Charlene Hubbard (Wayne), and Dennis Mettlach; 31 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren, and 18 great-great-grandchildren.
Margaret married Elmer David Mettlach on Aug. 12, 1930, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Pierce City where they were faithful members throughout their lives. Margaret worked along side Elmer and their children on their family farm in the Dry Valley area near Wentworth. She milked cows, put up hay, tended her garden, and canned food. She lived for nearly a century, watching the world around her progress from the horse and buggy days to the space and technology age.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer, in 1984; six brothers: Father Isador Diebold, John Diebold, Lawrence Diebold, Louis Diebold, Edmond Diebold, and Theodore Diebold; six sisters: Louise Dieterich, Marie Montray, Bernadette Pottier, Anna Thompson, Helen James Mahoney, and Pauline Moore; and three grandchildren: Annette Younker, Tim Younker, and Mark Dalton.
Funeral Mass for Margaret will be held at 10:30 a.m. on her birthday on Saturday, Dec. 18, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Pierce City. A rosary service and family visitation will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 17, at Wessell Funeral Home in Pierce City.
