Monett Lady Cubs down Neosho Wildcats

Wednesday, December 15, 2010

Someone pinch Monett Head Coach Derrek Uhl, because he might think he's dreaming. The Monett Lady Cubs won for the fifth time in six contests this season. Neosho was the Lady Cubs latest victim. Monett downed the Lady Wildcats 66-52 Monday night.

The Lady Cubs jumped out to a eight-point lead with shots from Hunter Glouse, Jenny Frazier, Madison Carlin and Amanda McKinney.

At the end of the first quarter Monett led 16-6. The second quarter was even better for Monett. The Lady Cubs poured in 24 points, taking a 40-20 lead into halftime.

"That is the best first half of basketball we have played this year," said Uhl. "The girls did a good job of moving without the ball and making the extra pass."

The Lady Wildcats made a run in the second half and cut the lead to eight. But Monett was able to make their free throws late to ice the game.

"We got into some foul trouble in the second half, which helped them make a run," added Uhl. "I was proud how we held them off through some adversity and still came up with the win."

Monett was led in scoring by Glouse with 25 points. Carlin poured in 16 points. McKinney chipped in 8 points. Dedre Beckett and Danielle Neill contributed 5 points. Frazier finished with 7 points.

The Monett Lady Cubs basketball team will be in action Tuesday Dec. 21, against Carthage.

Monett Boys

The Monett Cubs basketball team fell 51-41 to the Spokane Owls Tuesday night.

The Cubs couldn't get on track all night against a pesky and persistent Owls' squad. Monett trailed 16-7 at the end of the first quarter and 26-17 at halftime. The Cubs would close the gap to 34-26 by the end of the third period, but Spokane would hold on for the win.

"The difference in us winning and losing right now is rebounding," said Monett Coach Ty Goetz. "We are not doing a good job on the glass on either end.

"We struggled shooting the ball tonight, which hurt because we couldn't set up the defense we wanted to early," added Goetz. "Their press gave us some trouble also."

Tyler Green and Trenton Pierce led the Cubs in scoring with 10 points each. Kyle Woods chipped in 7 points. Jarred Witt added 5 points. Chris Eimer scored 4 points. Christian Wooldridge contributed 2 points.

The Monett JV squad fell 46-42 to Spokane.

Jacob Fair was Monett's leading scorer with 12 points. Aaron Hall and Aaron Patterson each chipped in 9 points. Caleb Blue and Tyler Bass finished with 4 points each. Kenny Green and Zach Swearingen scored 2 points apiece.

The Cubs will play Republic Friday night.
