Walter Eugene Henson, age 90, longtime resident of Monett, departed this life at 4:10 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 13, 2010 at the Mt. Vernon Place Care Center in Mt. Vernon, MO, where he had resided since March. He had been in declining health for one year.
|Mr. Henson was born on Feb. 25, 1920, in Monett, the oldest son of Walter Leonard and Flossie Leona (Long) Henson. He was united in marriage to Juanita Ruth Wormington on May 15, 1943, in Monett and she preceded him in death on March 22, 1989. To this union were born a son, Gary Winston, who preceded him in death on July 27, 2008, and a daughter, Deanna Kay.|
Mr. Henson began his working years as a driver for Whitlock Feed in Monett. In 1957, he was employed as a route salesman for what was to be a succession of potato chip companies: Denton, Kitty Clover, Clary House, Cardinal and Hiland. This position spanned over 25 years, with 12 of those years under Kitty Clover ownership. Throughout this employment he maintained a perfect attendance record, with no days missed due to illness. Subsequently, he was employed by IDF in Monett for ten years and after his retirement from IDF in 1994, he held a part-time position as a night watchman with Friend Tire Company until December of 2009.
He enjoyed woodworking and gardening and especially loved spending time with his family. Mr. Henson was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Monett.
In addition to his beloved wife and son, he was also preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Virginia Daniels; and by two brothers and a sister in early childhood, Donald B., Vernon Leroy and Wanda Ruth; and his son-in-law, William Arndt; and a step-grandson, William Arndt, Jr.
He is survived by his daughter: Deanna Arndt, of Neosho, MO; a sister, Dorothy Romero and husband Johnny, of Ceres, CA; his daughter-in-law: Barbara Henson, and grandson, Darrin, both of Monett; his granddaughter, Andrea Darby and husband, Brandon; and three great-grandsons: Caden Lane, Dru Jaxon and Eston Gene Darby, all of Bentonville, AR; one step-grandson: Milton Arndt; one step-granddaughter: Sharla Meyer; one step-great grandson: Waylon Arndt; two step-great granddaughters: Loren Arndt and Prudence Courtemanche; one great-great grandson: Krishan Nelson, all of Kansas City, MO; and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.
|Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 16, 2010 at the Buchanan Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Clif Crockett officiating. Interment will follow in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Monett.||Visitation will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 15 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Hospice Compassus of Springfield, Mt. Vernon Place Care Center or First United Methodist Church in Monett in care of the funeral home.|
