Pierce City parade is slated for Saturday

Thursday, December 9, 2010

Pierce City will host its annual Christmas parade on Saturday while the Verona community had its event cancelled.

For the fourth year the Pierce City Lions Club will host the parade. Line-up will begin at 4:30 p.m. on Gibbs Street, leading to the Central Elementary School. The parade will begin at 5:30 p.m. and proceed west on Commercial to Olive Street.

According to Lions spokesman Lee Jones, Santa Claus will be on hand, riding atop a city fire truck. Santa will meet with children following the parade at the fire station.

The parade will include the Pierce City High School Marching Band, floats, tractors and equestrian units. The Lady Eagles softball team will be the grand marshals. The team finished its season with a record 19 wins and seven losses, bowing out in the state quarterfinals to eventual state champion Warsaw. Darin Henderson is the team coach.

No sponsor stepped forward to organize this year's Christmas parade in Verona. Consequently, the parade was cancelled.
