The Monett Cubs notched their first win of the season, knocking off Stockton 70-65 Tuesday night.
Monett trailed 40-37 at halftime and outscored Stockton 33-25 the rest of the way.
"We were not pleased with our defensive effort in the first half," said Monett Head Coach Ty Goetz. "The boys responded in the second half by playing more physical and showed more effort on the defensive end."
Kyle Woods's 32 points led Monett statistically. Tyler Green chipped in 23 points. Jarred Witt added 6 points. Christian Wooldrige finished with 4 points. Dillon Freudeuthal scored 3 points. Aaron Hall pitched in 2 points.
"Kyle (Woods) and Tyler (Green) did a nice job offensively," said Goetz. "I thought the team did a great job on finding the hot hand and creating open shots. I thought we executed better tonight by making the extra pass. I was proud of the way the boys handled a little adversity late in the game and were able to finish them off."
Monett will host McDonald County Friday night. Tipoff is at 6 p.m
Monett's Hunter Glouse scored a career-high 35 points to pace the Lady Cubs (3-1) in their 72-23 win over the Buffalo Lady Bison Monday night.
Monett used a 31-0 run to build a 49-point third quarter lead and never looked back.
"I am very proud of our girls tonight," said Monett Coach Derrek Uhl. "This was a team win. Offensively, we made the extra pass and found the open shooter. Defensively, we forced Buffalo to turn the ball over and take a lot of unbalanced shots."
Monett jumped out to a 22-6 lead at the end of the first quarter and lead 40-14 at the break. Glouse poured in 21 of Monett's 23 third quarter points.
"As a coach, you are concerned how your team is going to respond against a struggling opponent," said Uhl. "We were able to establish a lead and get all of our girls into the game. The win gives us a great boost heading into the meat of our schedule. I am happy for these girls."
Glouse led the way statistically for the Lady Cubs with 35 points. Madison Carlin chipped in 7 points. Dedre Beckett and Daniel Neill each contributed 6 points. Anna Cloud and Amanda McKinney each had 3 points. Raigan Ratliff, Jessica Harper and Nicollette Fellwock each finished with 2 points.
The Lady Cubs host Nevada Thursday night at 6 p.m.
