The Verona Wildcats basketball team fell 52-43 to Sarcoxie Friday night in the Pierce City Tournament.
Verona started the game with ferocious attack and led 19-12 at the end of the first quarter. However, the Bears length and depth began to wear on Verona and the Wildcats trailed 30-29 at the break.
Our lack of rebounding and aggressiveness on the offensive end after the first quarter was costly," said Verona Head Coach Brad Stewart. "On the bright side we forced 25 turnovers. We just didn't play the entire game with the same energy that we did the first half.
Verona was led in scoring by Wesley Kissinger 16 points. Seth Losack chipped in 11 points. Cody Ernsberger scored 9 points. Larry Patterson added 7 points for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats will play Tuesday, Dec. 7 at Exeter.
The Verona Lady Wildcats fell 71-34 to the Republic Lady Tigers Saturday in the Aurora Lady Houn' tournament third place game.
"We got beat by a better team," said Verona Coach Ryan Yates. "I think we learned a few thing about our team this week. I tried to schedule tougher teams to help make us better.
"We have to box out and keep taller teams off the board," added Yates. "Our younger girls are going to have to mature and help carry this team. I was proud of the way we competed and I think we got a good read on where we are at in this stage of the season.
Verona was lead in scoring by Tristan Carrasquillo with 22 points. Taylor Pinkly added 4 points, and Jenna Chadd finished with 8 points.
The Lady Wildcats play Tuesday, Dec. 7 at Exeter.
