The Verona Lady Wildcats fell 43-30 to the Class 3 powerhouse Mt. Vernon Lady Mountaineers Thursday night in semifinals of the Aurora Lady Houn' Tournament.
The Lady Wildcats pressured the Lady Mountaineers into 18 turnovers.
"Defensively, I liked our intensity," said Verona Head Coach Ryan Yates. "We were able to speed Mt. Vernon up and force them to turn the ball over. We just failed to hit our open shots."
Mt. Vernon stayed in a suffocating two-three zone much of the evening, and Verona struggled to hit open jumpers. The Lady Wildcats were one of 13 from the three-point line.
|"I thought we were improved from our Monday night game," said Yates. "We are still a young team. You never like to lose any game in which you play, but I think we can learn from this game and it will make us a better team.|
"We could have folded several times, and this game could have been a blowout," added Yates. "Our girls kept battling and as a coach that is what you want to see out of your squad."
Verona was led in scoring by Tristan Carrasquillo with 14 points. Jenna Chadd and Jessica Smith each chipped in 8 points.
Verona will play in the third place game on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. against Republic in Aurora.
