MMS girls basketball season starts`

The Monett Middle School basketball seventh and eighth grade girls' season is now underway. The seventh grade girls split their first two matches. The Lady Cubs defeated Diamond 37-28 and fell to East Newton 24-21.

Against Diamond, the Lady Cubs were led in scoring by Brooke Madison's 12 points. Monett also received help from: Abby Krueger who chipped in 11 points; Haylee Morris, 6 points; Allie Krueger, 4 points; Brooke McLean, 3 points; and Brooke Burnside, 2 points.

In the East Newton match, Haylee Morris had 6 points, Madison also chipped in 6. Krueger added 6 points. Ballay scored 2 points and Kendall Bounous had 1 point.

The Monett Lady Cubs seventh grade team has a record of 1-2 in its first three contests. Monett opened the season with a 24-22 win over Diamond. The Lady Cubs fell 40-12 to East Newton and 32-20 to Mt. Vernon.

Against Diamond, Katie Tinklepaugh had 2 points. Ginna Verhoff added 4 more. Lakin English chipped in 4. Aubrey Parker scored 6 points. Laurn Bass added 2 points. Grace Cloud added 2 points and Lauren Brown added 4 more to round out the scoring.

In the match against East Newton, Verhoff scored 4 points. Cloud had 6 points and Brown added 2. Leading scorers for the Lady Cubs in the Mt. Vernon game were: Verhoff, 6 points; English,6 points; Cloud, 6 points; and Brown 2 points.

"We are starting to play a lot better," said seventh grade Head Coach Joni Reed. "Our defense is getting better, and we are starting to do the little things right. We have improved greatly over the last three games. I am very proud of this team."
