Volunteers were ready last evening at the First United Methodist Church for the opening of the Community Kitchen. The first person coming to eat did not arrive for about 15 minutes after the 5:30 p.m. opening.
"We didn't know what to expect," said Steven Stidham, co-chairman of the Kitchen with Charlene Dent. "Maybe it will take time for people to feel comfortable to come."
The Community Kitchen is serving meals free of charge from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday and noon to 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Family Life Center of the First United Methodist Church, located at 1600 N. Central in Monett. Rides are offered from Crosslines and the Monett Senior Center. For additional information, call Dart at 235-2364.
