The pressure is on for the Pierce City Eagles football team. Win this Friday against Marionville and the playoffs are still in reach, lose and 10 games will be the entire season for the Eagles.
"It's a situation we didn't want to be in," said Pierce City Coach Mac Whitehead. "We just need to concentrate on getting better this week."
Last week the Eagles fell from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 41-6 loss to Miller.
|"Penalties in critical situations killed us," said Whitehead. "We were able to have some success moving the ball against Miller's defense, and we would go from third and two to third and 13 because of a holding call. It was Pierce City beating Pierce City. Miller is a great team, and you cannot help them out.|
"We had too many mental mistakes," added Whitehead. "Those mistake killed us. Miller was prepared Friday night, and they made us pay the price."
You cannot dwell on the past, and there is still football to be played this year. Pierce City now turns its full attention to the Marionville Comets who picked up an opening round district win against Skyline last week.
"Marionville is a big physical team," said Whitehead. "Their left tackle is listed at 6'8", 285 pounds and on tape that estimate looks conservative. The Comets like to spread the field and run an offense that is similar to Miller's.
"We have to do our jobs on defense," said Whitehead. "I felt at times last week we tried to make a big play instead of playing our assignment. We can't afford to make that mistake again. Offensively, we have to eliminate penalties, get our skill guys out in space and we must dictate the tempo."
Kickoff for Friday's game is slated for 7 p.m.
