The Verona Lady Wildcats (20-6-2) took first place in the Golden City volleyball tournament last Saturday.
"It was a good day," said Verona Head Coach Brad Stewart. "The girls played with great enthusiasm and effort the entire match."
In pool play Verona defeated Golden City 25-11, 25-20. The Lady Wildcats then handled New Covenant 25-23, 25-18. In the semi-finals Verona downed Sarcoxie 25-15, 25-18.
That set up a championship match with Diamond.
Verona quickly fell behind 2-10 in the first set, after a timeout the Lady Wildcats responded wit a 23-11 run to comeback and win. Verona would go on to claim the match 25-21, 22-25 and 25-23.
"I personally felt fortunate to watch two teams play such great defensive volleyball," said Stewart "Watching our girls play with great teamwork and passion was a nice sign of growth and maturity."
Verona's Jenna Chadd helped lead the Lady Wildcats over Diamond with 19 assists, four aces and 10 digs. Jessica Smith added nine kills and 21 digs. Tristan Carrasquillo contributed 13 kills, 12 digs and one block. Taylor Pinkly added five kills and 17 digs. Lynnsey Youngberg had nine digs and Amanda Mullen added two blocks.
Statistically for the tournament Shelby Barsotti one kill and one assist. Kelsei Krueger had 100 percent serve accuracy and Jordyn Butler 2 assists and 3 digs.
Verona will host Galena for their final regular season home match this Tuesday.
