On a crisp and cool Thursday night the Monett Cubs soccer team picked up 3-1 win over Marshfield.
"I couldn't be more pleased with the kids effort tonight," said Monett Coach Jeremy Wilson. "We played a very physical team and were able to keep our composure and win."
The Cubs dominated the first half of play. Monett's Travis Thompson scored in the 13th minute unassisted, followed by an Efrain Ceniceros unassisted goal in the 37th minute to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.
"We knew that Marshfield would not quit," said Wilson. "I told the team at halftime to prepare for a quick attack by Marshfield."
The coach was right. Marshfield went on the attack early in the second half. They outshot the Cubs 6-0 in a nine-minute stretch, finally finding the back of the net on a penalty kick in the 49th minute.
The Cubs switched to a more defensive posture to counter Marshfield's attack when something unexpected happened in what can only be explained as the shot of the night.
Monett's Perdo Almaraz was awarded a direct kick 40 yards away from the Marshfield goal in the 76th minute. Almaraz struck the ball with his right foot and sent it beautifully into the upper right corner of the net, just out of the reach of the outstretched fingertips of a diving Marshfield goalie.
"I just kicked it hard," said Almaraz. "Coach always says good things will happen if you kick the ball at the goal."
"I don't know how that ball went in," said Wilson. "That was a big goal for us. That kick is one of the best this year for this team."
Monett goalie Freddy Lopez had 10 saves for the Cubs.
Monett's final home game of the regular season is Monday night against Bolivar.
