Lady Eagles are headed to state quarterfinals

Thursday, October 14, 2010

Another first occurred for the Pierce City Lady Eagles softball team as they defeated Crane 8-3 to capture their first sectional title Wednesday night.

The Lady Eagle will travel to Warsaw to face the Lady Wildcats Saturday.

Pierce City's Sara Stearns was dominant on the mound. She pitched seven innings, allowed one hit, walked two and struck out four.

"We weren't as sharp as I thought we should be," said Pierce City Head Coach Darin Henderson. "We played hard as a team and found a way to win. Now we turn our focus to the next game."

Crane made one late charge to try to catch the Lady Eagles when they cut Pierce City's lead to 5-3 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. But the Lady Eagles, spurred by a Gabby Phillips two-run single, were able to plate three runs in the top of the seventh to stretch their lead back to five.

Stearns, Makina Kelley and Kaelyn Osborn had three hits each for Pierce City. Stearns and Kelley had two doubles each. Osborn scored twice, and Stearns drove in a pair of runs for the Lady Eagles.

The start time for Saturday's state quarterfinal game had yet to be announced at press time.
