Monett girl to appear on TV

Wednesday, October 13, 2010

Three Monett girls are making their way in the television industry. One will appear on the NBC sitcom "The Office" on Thursday.

The sisters are the children of Chase Burk and Crystal Maples. Burk and the girls have been living in the Los Angeles, Calif., area for the past two years. Their mother runs her husband's lawn care business in Monett and frequently flies to the West Coast to be with the girls.

Molly Burk, 4, has the big break this week, appearing on "The Office" with Steve Carrell. The episode airs locally at 8 p.m on Thursday, Oct. 14.

The family's involvement in the entertainment industry started seven years ago.

"We answered an ad in The Monett Times looking for people to take classes," Maples said. "We met at a hotel and got her into classes in St. Louis."

The family followed the coursework by going to one of the semi-annual sessions offered by the International Modeling and Talent Association (IMTA) in New York City. McKenzie Maples, their oldest daughter, competed against thousands of girls and advanced to callbacks at the end of the week.

"We ended up going to Los Angeles," Maples said. "McKenzie signed with a manager and an agent and began going on auditions for six months."

McKenzie made in-roads and had an agent in Kansas City for work in Missouri. Maples said in time the family pulled back from the pressures of the business. Two years ago, they decided to make another run at it. Burk and the girls moved to Los Angeles while Maples continued to coordinate life from Monett.

"All three girls have agents now," Maples said. "They're doing very well."

Madalyne Burk, now 8, wanted to follow in her older sister's footsteps. She began taking evening classes at the Santa Clarita School of Performing Arts, near the girls' home in Valencia. The girls attend regular high school during the day.

"The girls came back to Monett for the summer," Maples said. "They'll be back for Christmas. I fly back and forth a lot."

McKenzie has done the cover of "Oriental Trading" catalog, a music video called "Me Time," a film called "She's a Fox," a Mattel commercial and an Oreo Cakester print ad. She has appeared inthe movie "Gods of Accidents" and a student film. She also has worked in numerous fashion shows.

Madalyne has done four Old Navy commercials, a "Strawberry Shortcake" Hasbro commercial and a local commercial for Los Angeles. She has walked in numerous fashion shows and will be in the Six Flags Magic Mountain fashion show on Oct. 24.

Molly wanted to be like her sisters, Maples said, and began taking classes this year at the School of Performing Arts once she reached age 4.

"Molly enjoys doing it all," Maples said. "Her sisters get a kick out of her in fashion shows. She really struts her stuff."

Molly has also done local commercials and a Walmart commercial. She will also be in the Six Flags Magic Mountain fashion show on Oct. 24.

The family has been reflective about the girls' work, recognizing interest can come and go.

"When the kids don't want to do it any more, they don't have to," Maples said.
