The 2010 softball season ended for the Monett Lady Cubs Thursday night as they fell 7-5 to Aurora.
The Lady Cubs jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, but couldn't hang on.
In the first inning, Raigan Ratliff singled and stole second. She advanced third on a groundout by Katie Upchurch. Kelsey Wiseman then hit a double, and advanced to third on a throwing error. On the next play Ratliff scored. Then Andrea Soriano grounded out to score Wiseman.
"This sport can be cruel," said Monett Head Coach Ty Goetz. "You're rolling along, leading for five innings and the next thing you know you're down 6-2."
The Lady Houn' Dawgs plated six runs in the top of the sixth inning to put Monett in a hole. Monett would make one more charge.
In the bottom half of the sixth inning Wiseman led off with a double. Josee Krueger then hit a double and Wiseman moved to third. Avery Bounous then supplied some power hitting a 3-run blast to cut the lead to 6-5.
"I was proud of the way we battled back," Goetz added. "Avery (Bounous) did a nice job of taking it personal and hit the bomb to put us back in the game. It's a disappointing way to end a great season."
The Lady Cubs finished the season with a record of 16-11.
"This team was a great team to coach," Goetz added. "Of our 11 losses, seven of them were by two runs or less. That shows that these girls are competitors. The seniors will be greatly missed. In their four years, they have helped us become a team that can compete with anyone. Monett softball is definitely on the right track."
A special thank you to Ty Goetz for the play by play and statistics.
