Monett tennis repeats as Big 8 champs

For the second consecutive year the Monett Lady Cubs tennis team won the Big 8 Conference Tennis Tournament. Monett defeated Mt. Vernon, Carl Junction and Lamar last Friday in Joplin to claim the crown

"I am proud of these girls," said Monett Head Coach Bob Crain. "They put in a lot of hard work and it has paid off. They were able to overcome a slow start to the season and capture this championship."

Crain was also named Big 8 Coach of the Year.

"I am honored to receive this award," said Crain. "The girls won it for me. They put in the effort and work."

Monett finished first with 27 points. Mt. Vernon was second with 20 points, and Carl Junction finished third with 18 points.

Individually, the Lady Cubs dominated last Friday.

Monett's, Nrupa Desai singles, Katelyn Sperandio and Theresa Mangler all finished in first place in their respective singles play divisions. Carrie Robbins finish second in #1 singles.

In doubles, Robbins and Desai finished first in #1 doubles. Sperandio and Mangler finished second and Karrie Tinklepaugh and Darian Shields finished third.

"In our last doubles match, Mt.Vernon, Aurora and Carl Junction were rooting for our girls to beat Lamar," Crain said. "I thought our doubles play was outstanding today. I hope we can take the momentum from this win and use it in district play. I want to thank all the parents "

Monett will begin district play in Joplin this Wednesday.
