Mistake costs Cubs in annual dawg fight at Aurora

Monday, October 4, 2010

The Monett Cubs fell to the host Aurora Houn' Dawgs 28-20 in a Big 8 Conference football encounter last Friday night.

The Cubs remained within striking distance until the Houn' Dawgs converted a fourth down into a first down in the final seconds of the game to win the contest.

All Aurora early

It was all Aurora early in the game. The Houn' Dawgs received the opening kick off and marched 67 yards in 11 plays to take the lead.
Quarterback Clayton Sumners got it going for the home team with a 30-yard run on third down. The touchdown came on a one-yard dive by Sumners. The extra point was added by Cody Coatney to make the score 7-0 with 7:40 to go in the opening period.
Monett, 2-4 on the year and 1-2 in the league, failed to manage a first down on its first possession and had to punt. Aurora again began to drive but was halted near midfield on a fumble recovery by Marcus Enloe.

Tying score

The Cubs took advantage of the turnover by going in for the tying score. Quarterback Tyler Green completed passes of 16 yards to Broc Wolfe and 11 yards to Chris Eimer to get Monett close in the second quarter. The TD came on a two-yard run by Aaron Hall. Eimer's extra point knotted the score at 7-7 with nine minutes to go until intermission.
Two plays after the ensuing kick off, the Cubs had the ball back in good field position on a fumble recovery by Matt Murphy. Monett was unable to get its offense going and had to punt.
Aurora, 5-1 overall and 4-1 in the conference, then took the lead for good. The Houn' Dawgs, behind the running of Everett Basham, drove 92 yards in seven plays to score. The touchdown came on a 14-yard run by Basham. The point after was unsuccessful, leaving the score 13-7 in Aurora's favor with 4:28 remaining until halftime.

Game-changing play

With time winding down in the half, the Cubs regained possession of the ball at the Aurora nine-yard line on a pass theft by Eimer. Then came the game-changing play.
Not able to move the ball on offense, Monett had to punt. A bad snap on the attempt resulted in a punt that traveled only two yards, giving the Houn's great field possession just 11 yards from the end zone. It took just one play as Zack Keckler raced in for the TD with only 46 seconds left in the half. The two-point conversion run was added by Keckler to make the score 21-7 at the half.

Long drives

Both teams mounted long drives and neither team had to punt in the second half. In the end, it was the clock that worked against the Cubs.
Monett began the second half with a 70-yard drive in 12 plays behind the solid offensive line play of Jared Childress, Kyle Doss, Jeffery Craft, Ryno Johnson and Reese Bounous. The touchdown came on a three-yard run by Hall. The extra point by Eimer cut Aurora's lead to 21-14 with 6:35 to go in the third period.

The home team retaliated, however, with a long drive of its own. The Houn's advanced the ball 76 yards in a time-consuming 16 play march to go up by two touchdowns again. The TD came on a 10-yard run by Basham on the first play of the last quarter. The extra point by Coatney made the tally 28-14 with 11:53 left in the game.

The Cubs answered right back, going 69 yards in eight plays to score. A 43-yard scamper by Hall got Monett close. A key fourth down pass from Green to Eimer put the ball on the one-yard line. Green took it over from there. When the extra point failed, the score was 28-20 in Aurora's favor with 8:53 remaining.

Milking the clock

Aurora began milking the clock, maintaining possession with a long drive. The Houn' Dawgs reached the 21-yard line where they were faced with a fourth down and 15 with a little over a minute left to play.
Sumners then completed his only pass of the game, good for a first down at the two-yard line. With the Cubs out of time outs, the home team elected to take a knee on three straight plays to end the game.
Hall was the leading ball carrier for the Cubs and in the game, rushing for 160 yards on 27 carries. Basham had 150 yards on 31 rushes for Aurora. Green completed seven of 10 passes for 69 yards for Monett.
This Friday the Cubs will be at home against Mt. Vernon. The Big 8 Conference outing will also be homecoming for Monett.
Touchdowns: Monett--Hall 2, Green. Aurora--Basham 2, Keckler, Sumners. Extra point kicks: Monett--Eimer 2. Aurora--Coatney 2. Two-point conversion: Aurora--Keckler.
